With the recent passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a woman who blazed many trails and broke many glass ceilings, I couldn’t help but think that the character of Enola Holmes is one she would’ve enjoyed and one that so many little girls and women around the world will look up to.

In the recently released Netflix film, Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) is the little sister in the Holmes household. She has an older brother by the name of Mycroft Holmes (Sam Claflin) and another older brother who she shares a love of sleuthing in common with, and that’s the famous detective Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill). Despite not having a close relationship with either of them, they will be forced to reunite when their mother (Helena Bonham Carter) mysteriously goes missing.

As a 16-year-old trying to figure out her place in the world but on a set path to find her missing mother at whatever the cost, it was inspiring and refreshing to see Enola shine in a star-studded cast like this one. She refuses to act how society tells her to, she uses her intellect to decipher clues, her street smarts to survive and jiu jitsu lessons to tackle anything that comes her way, and when she meets a young boy (Louis Partridge) who wants to tag along with her on her journey, let’s just say it is he who is lucky to have crossed paths with her.

The film offers twists and turns, a heartfelt showing of the unbreakable bond between a mother and her daughter, a fun interaction where Enola turns towards the camera and talks to the audience and some mesmerizing graphics animations that offer a unique element.

However what the film offers that in my opinion is the most important contribution of them all, is that it shows how a young woman can do anything that she sets her mind to in order to make change. It shows that you have to make some noise if you want to be heard, a concept Ruth Bader Ginsburg was no stranger to.

I hope you enjoy the film as much as I did. Stay safe, stay streaming and stay tuned for next week’s Netflix review.
